Three Factors to Consider in Women’s Hair Loss

Is your hair falling out quicker than you can keep track of it? You may be experiencing hair loss and should consult a dermatologist. There are various forms of hair loss and their reasons. Even if you can’t stop hair loss, if you consult a dermatologist early enough, you might be able to respond to therapy!

Do you have any idea what causes female hair loss?

Women’s hair loss happens when a lady suddenly loses a considerable amount of hair. Humans typically shed between 50 and 100 individual hairs per day.
To maintain a healthy scalp, removing dead hair and allowing new ones to grow is vital. Hair loss happens when the equilibrium is upset, as more hair falls out and less hair grows in. Hair shedding is not synonymous with hair loss. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia.

Except for your lips, feet soles, and eyelids’ insides, almost every part of your body has hair. Vellus hair is a phrase that describes fine, short, light-textured hair.  Terminal/androgenic hair is denser, darker, and considerably longer.

What types of hair loss exist?

The three conditions to be mindful of are anagen effluvium, telogen effluvium, and FPHL.

  • Medicine poisons hair follicles, preventing their growth (like chemotherapy).
  • Telogen effluvium, or hair loss, is caused by increased hair follicles entering the telogen phase.
  • Androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern alopecia (FPHL) or male pattern baldness, is the most common alopecia. Hair begins to thin on top of the head and the sides.

How common is female pattern baldness?

It’s a prevalent misperception that hair loss is exclusively a male issue. More than half of women are expected to experience noticeable hair loss. Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects roughly 30 million women in the United States, accounting for one-third of all vulnerable women.

Is there a subset of women who are more prone to hair loss?

Any woman, young or old, can experience hair loss. However, it is more common in the following situations:

  • Women over the age of 40
  • Mothers who have just given birth
  • Survivors of breast cancer and those whose treatment was influenced by other medications
  • These ladies habitually wear their hair in tight ponytails or braids or use harsh chemicals to keep their hairstyle in place.
  • Women who have reached menopause.

Myths About Hair Loss

There is a lot of misinformation out there about hair loss. Nothing on the following list is accurate.

  • You’re balding because you overwash your hair or have it colored or permed.
  • Women who suffer from dandruff lose their hair for the rest of their lives.
  • Stress causes women’s hair to fall out permanently.
  • Hair regrows twice as thickly on shaved heads.
  • Standing on your head and stimulating blood flow can help encourage hair growth.
  • Brushing your hair 100 times each day will increase your health.
  • Hats and wigs exacerbate women’s hair loss.
  • Only educated women have hair loss.

If you find your hair falling out, you know something is wrong with your body. Knowing what’s causing your hair loss is crucial if you want to stop or at least slow it down. Three of the most common causes of female hair loss are listed below.

Stress

Stress can be detrimental to your health. Chronic stress can result in hair loss, headaches, insomnia, and depression. According to new research, stress may induce the body’s hair-producing cells to hibernate. It accomplishes this as a self-defense system to ensure that your energy is concentrated on the most critical regions of your body. Women may experience delayed hair loss for months after a stressful or traumatic event. Hair may regenerate a few months later. However, this is not always the case.

Trichotillomania

Despite its convoluted-sounding name, trichotillomania is more common than you might imagine. Women with this illness experience substantial hair loss due to their inability to control the temptation to pluck their hair. Preadolescents and young adults, mainly those aged 9 to 13, are more vulnerable to trichotillomania than any other age group. Hair loss can decrease a girl’s self-esteem during adolescence’s social and emotional changes.

Chemotherapy

Despite their effectiveness in treating cancer, chemotherapy medicines can damage hair follicles and cause hair loss. Hair loss is typically most noticeable during the first two months of chemotherapy. Hair may begin to regrow even before the treatment is finished.
