Phone Nix

We’re off to Switzerland to visit our son and then take a few days for a jaunt along the eastern shore of Lake Como. I’ll spare you the details of the usual miserable airport preliminaries and start with our arrival at our coach seats. Seats 40F and G were ours and with the crowd pushing […]

It’s Not About the A’s: What School Should Really Teach Us

Grades. Just hearing that word can make you feel proud, nervous, or kind of annoyed. A’s, B’s, C’s… and yeah, maybe even a D or an F. We see them on our report cards and tests, and they’re supposed to show how we’re doing in school. But here’s the real question: do grades actually matter?

How I Got Better at Baseball (Even When I Wanted to Quit)

At the beginning of the season, I was the relief pitcher. But I didn’t feel like one. I felt like a disaster. My pitching was terrible. My accuracy was all over the place—balls flying high, wide, and bouncing in front of the plate. I knew I needed to work on it, so I practiced constantly. I threw pitch after pitch after pitch. The concepts are so counter-intuitive that the only way to explain them is with the history of discovery.

I’m Graduating Middle School or Whatever

So, middle school is weeks away from being over. It’s a strange feeling—not super emotional or anything dramatic—but just weird knowing I won’t be back in that building next year. High school is up next, and even though I’m not exactly jumping for joy, I guess I’m ready for whatever’s coming.

Dick Tracy et al

Whenever my son Peter has to go for a long ride alone in his car, he asks me to keep him company. I usually go with him. It always turns out to be an adventure. One of the reasons is that we always talk or fight about something bizarre.
