It is for sure true that everything in life depends on timing. An incident, an accident, good or bad, in a blink of an eye a life, an entire population can be changed. These are no exceptions. Covid hit and the world turned upside down, causing divorce, death, a new closeness, or the opposite – hatred, lots of losses and for some, gains. Either we roll with the unexpected or we fall.
Evans Babitt and his wonderful wife Lali were ready for a new beginning. They had acquired a space for their business with room for a once upon a time neighbor who had become a friend, each with businesses that complemented each other. Much work needed to be done to the space and they were ready to go. New floors, new fixtures, and it would be perfect, They were excited but for timing. It was March of 2020, the start of no one going anywhere. It was two years before either space was complete.
Evans meeting Lali – that is an example of perfect timing. Lali had had a small tax business out of her house in Queens. Evans was in the financial world selling insurance and mutual funds. He was not yet doing taxes. It was 2008. His office was in a hispanic area and Evans did not speak Spanish. He called someone he knew who spoke Spanish and she told him that, at that moment, she could not help him because her brother in law was getting married. She invited him to tag along to the party. Through some contacts at the wedding, he met Lali’s sister, who thought that Evans felt familiar and that maybe he should meet her sister. Evans and Lali, whose full name is Eulalia, spoke on the phone. Here she was, the perfect woman. She was single, he was single and wanting not to be. She wanted a business partner and she wanted a home. She was pretty, spoke Spanish and was smart. Cutting the story short, Evans, on a whim went to a wedding and six months later, through a bunch of little coincidences, met his mate. Timing!
Evan and Lali together began Medatax in 2009, on Bergenline Avenue in North Bergen. They eventually moved to the office in Cliffside Park, on Anderson Avenue. They do payroll and sales taxes, help open and close businesses and of course personal income taxes. Their business radius seems to be throughout the US although they are very committed to working within their local community. They are very hard workers, working diligently to educate their clients, teaching them how to handle their finances and how to save. They help them get the proper licenses for their particular niche, like for example, a nail salon. or a home improvement business. They can register a business and help a new business have a catchy and/or an appropriate name. They invest a lot of care and hand holding into each fledgeling business owner. These clients are ambitious entrepreneurs. Some are new to the US and have never learned what it takes to run a successful business while building wealth for their future. Lali and Evans seem to be somewhat saint-like because of the work they are doing. Of course, they also earn their living, but there’s a lot of satisfaction knowing they are changing the lives of many of their clients.
Entering their office, there is a large sitting area where they hope to eventually run workshops to help the community and reinforce what they are trying to teach their clients on a one to one basis.
The Babitts have a lovely philosophy, to put a little vacation into everyday life. This, even if it is just taking their young granddaughter to the park, cooking a wonderful meal together, or enjoying a great movie, it is all about attitude and how we look at things.
In his spare time Evans enjoys the study of meteorology. He has a love of great music, especially Beethoven and Wagner. Eclectic, interesting, smart and kind describes this unusual couple.
