Some of you know I have graduate training as a meteorologist and served as a weatherman in the USAF and for a while for TWA at JFK (So long ago it was still called Idlewild) When I was stationed at Dover AFB, we had several hurricanes hit or come close to the base. Forecasting their direction and intensity was very serious and we had very little information. High winds knocked over airplanes on the ground. The best we had was info from ships and planes and the Hurricane Hunters. At one crazy time in my life, I flew with the Hurricane Hunters out of Bermuda for a few months. I flew into Hurricane Carrie in 1957 at least 12 times. I did it for $150/month extra. The things we do for large amounts of money!
But the reason for my thought it that there is so much information available that we never had in those days and it is now readily available to anyone interested, on the internet. We have radar, satellites, in addition to all the old things. Moreover, the research done with computers and created computer models that, while not perfect, are incredibly accurate most of the time predicting where they’re going. There are different satellite images using special cameras which are usually more than anyone needs.
For your own information, it also predicts the possible formation of hurricanes as storms come off the coast of Africa. If you have an interest is seeing something interesting and fun, try going to the website nhc.noaa.gov. Nhc for national hurricane center, at NOAA.. You’ll be amazed.
