Embark on a picturesque bike ride through Bergen County’s Northern Valley, a region rich in history, natural beauty, and personal reflection. For me, bike riding has always been special—a cherished blend of freedom, exploration, and connection with nature. Like a traveler or wanderer, I ride with a sense of wonder, always seeking new sights and the chance to meet like-minded adventurers along the way. When I’m on my bike, I feel free and unencumbered; the rhythm of the pedals, the rush of adrenaline, and the fresh air fill me with vitality and peace. Being outside, attuned to nature, reminds me of life’s simple joys and the beauty that surrounds us when we take the time to notice.
Starting Point: George Washington Bridge Path Begin your journey at the western terminus of the GWB path on Hudson Terrace. This relatively flat stretch offers views of historic mansion ruins and stone walls, remnants of a bygone era. The cool breeze off the Hudson and the gentle hum of the tires on pavement awaken a sense of adventure right from the start.
Stop 1: Palisades Interstate Park Commission Allison Gardens
A short ride brings you to Allison Park in Englewood Cliffs. These gardens, once part of the estate of William Outis Allison—the borough’s first mayor—offer a serene glimpse into the area’s past. Opened in 1934, the park sits atop the Palisades, where Allison built his estate near the former Palisade Mountain House hotel. Standing here, overlooking the Hudson River, I often pause to breathe in the crisp air and imagine the lives that once thrived in these storied grounds. It’s a reminder that every ride isn’t just about the miles traveled but the moments taken to appreciate where you are.
Continuing North on Route 9W Pedal north along Route 9W, paralleling the Palisades Interstate Parkway Scenic Byway. This route, tracing the parkway’s historic western boundary, is where I truly feel the joy of movement—each turn of the pedals syncing with the natural landscape unfolding around me.
Stop 2: State Line Lookout via Old Route 9W
At the New York state line, turn onto Old Route 9W near the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. This charming road ascends toward the renowned State Line Lookout. The climb is challenging, but reaching the top rewards you with panoramic views of the Hudson River. Standing there, heart pounding from the climb, I feel both exhilarated and humbled by the vastness of nature stretching before me.
Descent to Palisades and Sneden’s Landing After soaking in the vistas, descend into the hamlet of Palisades. A quick detour leads to Sneden’s Landing, historically significant for its 18th-century ferry service connecting to Dobbs Ferry. Gliding down the winding roads, I find a childlike joy in the effortless speed and the cool rush of wind against my face.
Continuing to Sparkill, NY Return to Route 9W and continue north to Sparkill, formerly known as Tappan Sloat during colonial times. This quaint hamlet whispers stories of its rich past. It’s places like these—unassuming yet brimming with history—that make every ride an exploration of both landscape and legacy.
Stop 3: Historic Tappan and the ’76 House
Head west through Sparkill to the historic town of Tappan. The ’76 House, one of America’s oldest operating taverns, beckons with the promise of a cold beverage and a warm atmosphere. Resting here, sipping a drink, I relish the camaraderie of fellow travelers and the shared appreciation of the journey.
Northward to West Nyack via Western Highway Pedal north on Western Highway toward West Nyack. The climb up Bradley Hill Road is demanding, but reaching the summit near Camp Shanks and the old Nike Missile Battery offers sweeping views that make every drop of sweat worthwhile. It’s these challenging stretches that remind me of cycling’s rewards—pushing limits and finding beauty in the effort.
Crossing the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Descend from the heights and head east to cross the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The five viewing platforms along the span are perfect spots to pause, refuel, and take in the breathtaking expanse of the Hudson River below. Standing there, I feel small in the best possible way—connected to something much larger.
Optional Extension:
North County Trail For those with extra energy, venture onto the North County Trail. Following the old Putnam Division rail line, this peaceful path meanders alongside the Saw Mill River Parkway, offering a meditative ride through wooded landscapes and whispering leaves.
Return Journey via River Road When it’s time to head home, cross back over the Cuomo Bridge and pick up River Road in West Nyack. The ride through the charming village of Grand View is serene, with tree-lined streets and the gentle lull of the river nearby. Rejoining Route 9W south in Piermont, I often find myself reflecting on the day’s journey—grateful for the miles ridden, the sights seen, and the freedom felt.
